Welcome to Family Tame

Hello! Welcome to Ricky, Jack, Satoko and Joseph’s home on the web

We’re a young (ish!) family living in Tokyo, running a small business, co-running an educational NPO, and trying to figure out how to give our children the best opportunities to grow & embrace life in a bilingual environment.

We’re sharing our journey for a couple of reasons, the first being that it will encourage us to get out and do more creative activities as a family (as opposed to just working non-stop 7 days a week, which is how it’s traditionally been for us). We also help that it will become a valuable resource for other parents in Japan, or those planning to start a family here, or here for an extended period for work.

Hope you enjoy it – and do join us on YouTube and Facebook too!

Bugaboo Cameleon 3 Review

A little while ago, "Daddy's Diary" became the featured article in the Isetan-Mitsukoshi baby goods catalogue. In addition to the diary, I also reviewed the Bugaboo Cameleon 3 buggy, a stroller that's a favourite of parents in the UK and the US, but not seen so often...

Tokyo Veranda Garden

As a child, I could often be found out in the garden, helping dad in his vegetable patch. Potatoes, leeks, onions, cabbages, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and more - we grew the lot! From making compost to planting the seeds to harvesting the crops, I loved this...

Preparing to give birth in Japan

Ricky, pre-birth. We've not told many people about this yet, but baby #2 is on the way, due in November 2016! Based on the family history of early births it's likely that the actual birth will be in late October. Whereas Ricky was born in our local hospital here in...

Mutant Zoo

Although I went to a school that encouraged children to draw, paint and express themselves through art (that is, a Steiner School), after leaving school I rarely tried to draw. It wasn't that I didn't like drawing, it was more that when I did draw I was disappointed...

Which language do we use at home?

One thing we're often asked is, "What language do you speak at home?" We have quite a lot of friends with international families, and see that everyone has their own way of doing things, based on their own individual circumstances, strengths and weaknesses. In our...

Cartoon blog

This morning, Satoko told me that cartoon blogs are very popular here in Japan, so I thought I'd give it a go. As you can see, there's still a little room for improvement, and perhaps it'll be a while before I'm a best-selling manga artist ...but it's a start. On a...
